After the fabulous closing night of Lysistrata and a wonderful birthday party for [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate and DD's darling Tadpole, [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I were crossing the street this evening when we were hit by a car. It was making a left turn into the street we were crossing; the driver had probably slowed for the turn but didn't seem to slow at all to avoid hitting us; he did pull over a ways down the block and come back. There were lots of witnesses, among them [livejournal.com profile] anomie666 who happened to be on a bus that was passing and who stayed with us through the whole evening. He is a wonderful person and he deserves a medal and some really good Scotch.

All the emergency vehicles (at least two police cars, a fire truck, an ambulance, and eventually the tow truck to take away the driver's car since he left in other accommodation) had enough flashing colored lights for a Somerville Christmas. We declined the ambulance since we were just a few blocks from the hospital and the paramedics wanted to put us in back and neck braces and that seemed over the top (neither of us had hit our heads or had spine pain). [livejournal.com profile] anomie666 walked with us to the hospital.

The ER experience was quite good; everybody was very nice and we were treated very well. We both got lots of X-rays. I got the brunt of the impact, but I'm just banged up a lot and swollen and bruised. [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom has a small fracture in her elbow (a radial head fracture), probably from when she landed. (I was thrown over the hood of the car, into [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom who was also clipped by the car.) They gave her a splint and a sling, which is going to be a hassle for a while. We're both on industrial-strength ibuprofen and I'll be icing for a while. (Fortunately, [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom had some bags of edamame in the freezer. :-)

Well, it wasn't the evening we were expecting, but at least we spent it together. [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom, I love you through thick and thin.

[livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I are home after a really wonderful trip! The drive down was slow in places (in part because of one bad accident we passed), and we ended up arriving many hours after we’d hoped to, but we made it OK. We had a really wonderful time with [livejournal.com profile] bcat1 and S. and the twins. And they had a rite of passage while we were there — we gave them their vuvuzelas!

They are such adorable, sweet, smart children, and we had a great time with them. Also with S. and [livejournal.com profile] bcat1. We got lots of time with lots of various combinations and it was great. Oh, and I got to meet a cousin of mine who was also there visiting, who is a very nifty and interesting person.

The drive back home was quicker and easier and very relaxed. I love travelling with [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom; she’s a delightful travelling companion and we always have a lovely time together.

OK, very nearly ready to fall down go boom. I am not caught up on social media and may well not catch up, so let me know if there’s anything important I’ve missed.

Since last weekend (Circus weekend!), I’ve been busy.

You might need to click this twice; I do, on two different browsers:

  • Monday was the regular Poly Boston dinner at Bertucci’s. Unfortunately [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom couldn’t make it because of rehearsal. It was quite fun, with a bunch of cool new people!
  • Tuesday I had dinner with [livejournal.com profile] xmelancholia near (my) work; she introduced me to a new-to-me restaurant, Mulan. I loved their chicken in chili sauce. More importantly, I loved the opportunity to catch up with [livejournal.com profile] xmelancholia. She rocks, and I hadn’t seen her in a while.
  • Wednesday I usually get together with [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine for dinner, but she was out of town for a funeral (my sympathies to [livejournal.com profile] buxom_bey, whose relative’s funeral it was), so [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I went over to hang out with [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate, DD, and little J, and we had a blast. Love that little baby! (Actually, love all of them!)
  • Thursday I got together with [livejournal.com profile] teratomarty, who works near me. Among the impetuses (impetusses? impeti?) for getting together were some biological specimens (small animals, mostly arthropods) in jars that I had aquired, and wanted to pass along to him. I had enjoyed the food at Mulan so much on Tuesday that I suggested we go there again. Had a great time.
  • Friday morning in the shower I heard that the annual sheepshearing festival at Gore Place was going to be Saturday. Oops! [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I love that event, and had tried unsuccessfully a month or so ago to figure out when it was. We ended up shuffling some plans around so we could go.
  • Friday night I drove to the airport to pick up [livejournal.com profile] bedfull_o_books, who was arriving at Logan after a very very long series of flights from Beirut. Got to hear about her fabulous visit to Lebanon and Egypt with [livejournal.com profile] r_ness, and she brought me some Lebanese coffee with cardamom which I look forward to making.
  • Saturday I slept really late (needed to; the flight was delayed, and I was sleep-deprived anyway to start with), so we were late to the sheepshearing festival, but we got there in time to enjoy epic fair noms, stroll among the vendors (and make some impulse purchases), and see the border collie demo (border collies managing sheep and goats). I had foolishly forgotten to bring my good camera, but I got a few photos on my phone which I may get around to posting eventually. Afterwards, we had dinner at Blue Ribbon Barbeque in Arlington, which I’d never been to before (although I’ve had it catered at work a few times). The brisket was quite good. (The sausage was good too, but, contrary to the menu’s assertion, it was not at all spicy.)
  • Today, after sleeping in (which we both needed) and breakfast at The Broken Yolk, I came home to Quincy for a very productive afternoon of yardwork and working on the house. I completed three of my four painting projects; just have a final coat on the office door left to do. I didn’t get as much cleaning done as I’d like, but I got lots of work done on the yard and I have the pleasant aches of a productive day of physical labour.

So, busy and happy (and as always, epically in love with my honeywuzzle).

So tomorrow [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I are driving down to North Carolina to visit my adorable niece and nephew, who are rapidly approaching two! We are so excited!

(Oh, we might say hi to their parents, too, if they happen to be around. :-)

I have it on good authority that there is also some Arby’s in our future.

No time for a full update, but:
  • On Friday, got together with [livejournal.com profile] ifuonlyknew, who is at home recuperating from surgery. Was great to hang out with her.
  • On Saturday, my beloved [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I saw the circus and had a wonderful time. This was also my first opportunity to see her awesome new hairdo! Then we went over to [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate's and DD's and got to hang out with them and their adorable month-old baby Julian. That was so fabulous!
  • On Sunday, after a lovely morning with [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom, I got together with [livejournal.com profile] eisa for dinner. Our plans were slightly altered by the fact that the Brazilian barbecue place we were aiming for was closed "by order of the court-appointed receiver". Sad! But we found yummy Indian food in Union Square and got to do a lot of catching up. Always great seeing her.
Must hurry off to work now, but wanted to let you all know I'm still here.

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate, who has brought many wonderful things into my life, but none more wonderful than [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom[livejournal.com profile] surrealestate is how we met.

[livejournal.com profile] surrealestate, I hope you really enjoyed your birthday present, even though it was about a week early. I bet you will get lots of enjoyment out of him! Properly cared for, he can last a lifetime. :-) And I hear you have a late birthday present coming, too...

Thanks for being a part of my life, [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate! You’re a delight, and I hope you’re having a wonderful birthday.

So, I desperately need to be cleaning and packing for a weekend trip. So naturally, I am procrastinating by organizing photos. ([livejournal.com profile] bcat1 and [livejournal.com profile] spacechicken, you should be glad I had another opportunity to procrastinate trip so soon after visiting you, so I’m getting the photos posted!)

Lots going on over the last few weeks, and I’m so behind in reporting it that I’m just going to do bullet points, in something approaching reverse chronological order:
  • My beloved honeywuzzle [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom is cooking me eggs and ham and toast for breakfast.  Om nom nom!
  • We saw Despicable Me last night and really enjoyed it.
  • I feel like I’m hitting my groove at the new job, and feeling really good about it.
  • Talked to [livejournal.com profile] bcat1 recently; she and the babies are doing really well.  They’ve started rolling over and are just starting the process of learning to crawl.  My mother [livejournal.com profile] silverlibre is going to visit in August, while papa [livejournal.com profile] spacechicken is visiting family in Canada.
  • The festival went really really well! We sold out most of the nights, which is unusual.  (We usually sell out one or two.)  The cast party was lots of fun, but judging by the scandalous things I’ve been hearing, we may have left a bit too early.  As I posted earlier, I have photos from the show [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom directed up, and hope to get photos of the rest of the shows up soon.
  • Oh, speaking of photos, yesterday after going in to work for an upgrade I took a bunch of photos of the building I work in, also to be posted soon.  Practical it’s not, but it sure is pretty.
  • I love living in Boston.  [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine and I have been going to a series of free outdoor classical concerts.  Now that she’s done with the semester’s classes, [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom can join us for some of them.
  • I’m really enjoying the summer, with walks along the river and lots of good outdoor time.  [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I are going to the beach next weekend.
I’ve got loads more to say, but that at least lets you all know that I’m still here and still having fun!

OK, I should have posted these ages and ages ago, but here finally are the pictures from my trip with [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom to North Carolina last month to meet Rider and Genesis, [livejournal.com profile] bcat1’s and [livejournal.com profile] spacechicken’s twin babies: Visiting the babies, June 2010 (on Flickr).

(Sorry for the lack of editing and the somewhat austere captions.)

EDIT: [livejournal.com profile] spacechicken pointed out that I had a bunch of the photos miscaptioned as to which gorgeous little love-cupcake they depicted. Fixed now.

No time to do this trip justice, but [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I had a wonderful, wonderful visit with [livejournal.com profile] bcat1 and [livejournal.com profile] spacechicken and their two wonderful darling little babies. They're four months old and so spectacularly sweet and adorable! It was wonderful, and I can't wait to go back.

Expect pictures later this week.

EDIT: I’m a slacker, but plumtreeblossom and spacechicken have pictures up already.

In the cab with [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom on the way to the airport for a super-quick visit to North Carolina to meet our new niece and nephew, [livejournal.com profile] bcat1's and [livejournal.com profile] spacechicken's twins. Can't wait!

The last few days have been excellent. [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom has had some good news: (1) thanks to Jim Bunning backing down, her unemployment benefits were reinstated — along with most other people’s who were in her situation —, although there was a lot of confusion around that fact as Massachusetts’ unemployment office ramped up again, (2) she has a temp gig for the next few weeks, which she’s had a day of so far and it seems pleasant, if not as lucrative as one might want, and (3) I’m going to let her post about lest I steal her thunder.

I had several very social days; got together with a friend on Wednesday, saw [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate and a bunch of her friends for games on Thursday (although I conked out kind of early), and had dinner with [livejournal.com profile] eisa on Friday.

Thursday night (after games, which she couldn’t make it to) I stayed at [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom’s, and then last night she cooked dinner for me — a wonderful meal in the crockpot — before we went to a delightful and colourful birthday party where there was much dancing to ’80s music. (And I again conked out early, but I am told I was very cute snoozing in the dance hall.)

Today we slept late, and the weather was so warm, sunny, and delightful that we walked to Davis Square and shared an ice cream sundae sitting outside and listening to a (quite good) busker.

Got to talk to my sister and brother-in-law yesterday. She’s home from the hospital, as is one of the twins, and the other one is expected to come home on Monday. Our mother’s flying out there on Thursday.

And I got my formal official paper offer letter from MIT in the mail today.

It’s sure feeling like spring!

[livejournal.com profile] spacechicken has posted some photos of his and [livejournal.com profile] bcat1’s twins to Facebook. Here they are!
beowabbit: (Me: playing as a toddler in London’s Hyd)
I’m an uncle! My sister [livejournal.com profile] bcat1 and her husband [livejournal.com profile] spacechicken have had their twins! (I have to say, [livejournal.com profile] spacechicken got off easy. Next pregnancy, attempted induction, and C-section, he can have the babies!)

Rider was born at about 11:50 today at 4lbs. 12oz., and Genesis was born around noon at 4lbs. 5oz. (I don’t know whether she was named after the book of the Bible or the rock group.) Mother and babies are recovering apace, and as you would expect [livejournal.com profile] bcat1 is wiped out. She’s still in the hospital, and is likely to be for a few days; Rider and Genesis will probably be there for a bit longer.

I got the news in a phone call just now from my mother [livejournal.com profile] silverlibre; she and [livejournal.com profile] ka9sqb are very excited about being grandparents. She’s probably going to fly out to North Carolina soon to spend some time helping, with [livejournal.com profile] ka9sqb following. (I wish I were in a position to be able to travel, but hopefully later in the sprint or summer. [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom and I can’t wait to meet the babies!)
beowabbit: (Me: taking pictures in Hawaii)
So there’s this wonderful family photo of me at around two years old playing in Hyde Park. My mother made a copy for me, which I have somewhere very safe, I’m sure. But my sister also has a copy, and while we were down there last weekend I scanned it in. So here I am:

Me as a toddler 'dowsing' in Hyde Park, London, summer 1968.
Me as a toddler 'dowsing' in Hyde Park, London, summer 1968.
My parents spent three years in England for my father’s graduate work. This picture of me was taken by a family friend while we were in Hyde Park in London sometime in summer of 1968. My parents always called this my dowsing picture, although I sort of think it looks more like I’m ploughing. I was a cutie, wasn’t I?

Well, I had a lovely day at the water park, although I quite finished the job of getting sunburnt. (I have a phobia of getting anything oily on me, especially when I'm wearing contact lenses as I was yesterday, so I'd planned on wearing my nice new wide-brimmed hat, but we decided that wouldn't make sense since I couldn't take it on the rides. So I knew going in that I was going to get sunburnt. And my hair is short enough at the moment that I got sunburnt on the top of my head, too. :-)

We hung out with a woman Tom and Tigris know from Pali Paths (the Honolulu poly group) and her 6-year-old daughter who is quite a charmer. My favourite ride was one where you climb up to one edge of a tall parabolic trough and are released down the edge (very steep at the top), and you swing back up almost to the edge on the other side, and oscillate back and forth a few times before coming to rest at the bottom. I'm not describing it very well, but think of it as a giant U. You start at the top on one side of the U, and fall down to the bottom and continue back up almost to the other end, and then down again and so on, losing a little momentum on each pass. Lots of fun, although the second or third time I went on it I banged my lower back up a bit. (Also scraped my knee in the wave pool. The wave pool is not normally one of the more dangerous attractions, but I seem to have been using this trip as an opportunity to display my utter uncoordination.)

It was nice to get a little child-time, especially with such a pleasant-tempered, friendly child as this one.

For dinner, Tigris had originally wanted to go to an Indian restaurant. But we selected one and drove there and discovered that it was one she and Tom were familiar with and didn't like much, so we set out to find something else. Our next attempt was closed, but we ended up at a WONDERFUL Mediterranean place called Marbella (808/943-4353, 1680 Kapiolani Blvd.). The food and the atmosphere and the service were all spectacular. It was more expensive than we would have expected to pay for mediocre Indian food (entrees from $16-$20), but for the outstanding quality of the food it was quite inexpensive. For appetisers, we had falafel stuffed with buffalo mozzarella with spiced creme fraiche (which also formed part of the presentation of our entrees), served with balsamic vinaigrette and a touch of olive oil in a presentation that looked like the fanciest of desserts. And that was typical of the evening. The food was exceedingly good -- I had grilled filet of beef with potatoes au gratin and green beans with creme fraiche and lemon butter and some other sauces I couldn't quite identify. And we had a coupon for free desserts, which was actually what had led us to think of this restaurant in the first place, so we got to try some heavenly desserts. Tigris got a "chocolate ganache stuffed beignet"; I have no idea what ganache and beignet are, but it was very very yummy; it was a fried triangular pastry filled with chocolate sauce, served with ice cream and espresso. You pour the espresso over the ice cream to melt it, and then dip pieces of the chocolate-filled pastry into the espresso/ice cream mixture. I think the Pope issued an encyclical against this dessert once. Tom got an amazing chocolate-hazelnut gelato which he aptly described as "frozen Nutella", and I (who was pretty full by this time of the evening) got a rose sorbet, which would have been better about half as sweet but which had a lovely delicate flavour. Another amazing meal in Paradise.

This afternoon we're going to go sailing with a friend of Tigris' and Tom's who has his own catamaran. That should be wonderful! I've only been sailing once, and that was just on the Charles River in Boston. If I end up moving here (not going to happen soon, but still under consideration), I'd love to learn to sail.

Off now for a dip in the pool. Maybe Hamlet will come race me around the edge.
