I finally got around to uploading my Pride and Prejudice photos to Flickr.
Come work with me!
2012-04-25 14:32There’s an opening for a Linux sysadmin (with a bunch of user support mixed in, including Mac and Windows) in my group.
Stolen from email I just wrote for a mailing list:
If you’re interested, you should definitely fill out the online form at that link, but you should also contact me (email if you have it; otherwise comment here or direct message here or on Twitter) so that I help make sure your résumé doesn’t get lost or delayed.
My group has an opening for a system administrator (with a lot of end-user support and documentation mixed in). This is at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab at MIT, based in the Stata Center (most recently in the news because a Dalek landed on it).
We are primarily a Linux shop (currently Debian; probably Ubuntu in the foreseeable future) with a lot of the sort of quirks you’d expect from an MIT lab (AFS, lots of homegrown stuff, people with root on their workstations, etc.). We also have lots of Mac and Windows machines, and the person in this position will end up doing a fair amount of supporting Mac and Windows users, as well as Debian desktop support and system administration.
Our departing sysadmin (leaving for grad school) hopes to have some overlap with the new hire. He has an excellent and patient way with users, good documentation skills (internal and user-facing), a desire to do things the Right Way that will save us work down the road, and the gumption to take on substantial projects, and we'd love to have similar qualities in his successor.
(I forgot to mention in that mail that I’d love it if we found somebody with experience administering email on Linux/Unix systems, since I’m the postmaster and if we don’t I won’t really have a natural backup/collaborator for that. We use Exim, SpamAssassin, ClamAV, Mailman, and some homegrown stuff and have a slightly quirky email topology. That’s all optional, though.)

Just wanted to mention that I still have a room for rent in Quincy, in case anybody who reads this is looking or knows anybody who is. $800/mo. all utilities included. Since Craigslist URLs aren’t persistent, here’s a copy of the ad.
Yay for my wuzzle!

(The other play I recognized is Chris Lockheardt’s very funny “Not Funny”, which T@F has also done. Judging by the two shorts I’m familiar with, this is going to be a good festival!)
My love also grows delicious cucumbers on her balcony and makes awesome pickles out of them; I just had some.
I will confess I didn’t know until just now that Buddy Roemer was running for president. I don’t know a whole lot about his politics, but he is clearly the GOP candidate with the best sense of humour.
Highlights from his tweets:

Maybe I should've waited until *after* the Iowa caucus to say I would cut all ethanol subsidies. #corny
Herman Cain just called. He said he'd give me his 30 votes in Iowa if I stop making fun of 9-9-9. #racetothebottom
I almost have enough votes in Iowa to start a bowling league. #Roementum
BREAKING: Somebody who died in 1987 is beating me in Iowa. #invisibleman #LetBuddyDebate
One of my new housemates works in New Hampshire (when they moved in, he was hoping his job would have him working on the South Shore most of the time, but that seems not to have materialized), and the commute has turned out to be impractical for them. So I’m looking for a new housemate again starting January 1st or thereafter. The Craigslist post is here. (I’ll update this post when it expires; hurrying out the door right now.) Feel free to share and/or repost.
Working phone again!
2011-11-17 00:53My replacement phone arrived, and I believe I’ve restored all my stuff.¹ Yay!
¹ Except for a very few commercial apps which seem to have been stored in such a way that they weren’t in my backups, and I haven’t yet tried to migrate the text messages that arrived on the flaky temporary backup phone I was using while I waited for the replacement to arrive.

- My phone has died. My old spare phone is flaky and shuts down unexpectedly. Do not assume you can reliably reach me by phone or SMS for the time being. *Sigh.*
- Well, five days, seven solid work-crew-hours, three work trucks, one backhoe loader, and one dump truck later, I have a working stove again. (They’ve been repaving my street, and evidently a few days ago had to replace a working gas pipe a non-working one. They eventually replaced it with one that does work. Given the two possible failure modes for a gas pipe, I find the fact that we had a non-working gas pipe buried under the street and front yard for several days somewhat unsettling. I also find the fact that my gas pipe runs to my neighbour’s house, through her basement, and into my basement — and that she doesn’t actually have gas service herself — somewhat unsettling. Good thing I don’t use gas for heat! On the other hand, while I didn’t have to pay for it, this must have been the most expensive stove repair on the block in a long time.)
plumtreeblossom and I just saw Hair at the Arlington Friends of the Drama, and it was fabulous — or groovy, rather. And we covet their space.
- If you have a Dreamwidth account as well as an LJ account, and I’m on your Friends list on LiveJournal, could you add me there as well? That way I can comment there when I see cross-posts. (I’m beowabbit there as well as here.)
- The coffee-flavored jellybeans were not the high point of my evening, but they were definitely up there. I knew the flavor was very familiar, but I wasn’t actually able to identify it unaided. Now I think I’m going to be obsessing about coffee-flavored jellybeans for days.
I’ve Tumbled
2011-10-27 22:00Not that I need another social-networking site, but I’ve just joined Tumblr. Same username as here. If you’re on there and I should follow you, no promises, but let me know.

That thing with putting my house on the market didn’t work out so well, alas. So I’m looking for a housemate in my place in Quincy Center.
Here’s the Craigslist ad. Feel free to point anybody you know who might be interested at it (or this post). This ad is for the larger room, which I’m offering at $800/mo including all utilities.
( And here’s the text of the post, for convenience. )
Alternatively I’d be willing to rent the smaller room (which I’m in now) for somewhat less money. Haven’t figured out exactly how much, but maybe $600/mo including utilities. (The larger room is probably a better deal though; the small one is very small.)
I would like to try putting the house on the market again next season (for a sale sometime in or after the summer), but whether I do that and the timing could be influenced by a housemate. (So if a potential housemate wanted to stay through the end of the school year, or through the end of the summer, that’s almost certainly fine, and if they wanted to stay for a couple years or so that might work too.)
Anyway, feel free to spread far and wide! (And sorry I haven’t been posting much to LJ these days. I’ll fix that, just as soon as they put a few more hours in the day. :-)

Jay’s Android app list
2011-10-01 12:22(This was in response to somebody asking for Android app recommendations, but it was too long for an LJ comment, and I figured other people would be interested too. This includes Free, free, and for-pay proprietary apps; the links will tell you which is which.)
( Some of the Android apps on my phone, with notes. )Stuff to give away
2011-08-03 00:40As part of my effort to sell my house, I have a lot of stuff to get rid of. These are all available for pickup in Quincy. (The smaller things I might be able to bring to my work in Kendall Square.)
Here’s the first batch:
( Chairs, treadmill, turntable, various seats, oil lamps )
More no doubt to follow.

I should have posted about this some time ago. I’m in another live radio drama. (I.e., a radio-style voice-and-sound-effects show, but performed in front of an audience.) I play an interstellar explorer with a very useful skill in a radio adaptation of Clifford D. Simak’s “The Junkyard”, originally broadcast on NBC’s X Minus One. My beloved
plumtreeblossom is doing sound effects for another segment, Three Skeleton Key. Performances are July 14, 15, and 16, with two shows on the 16th.

(1) Happy birthday to
majes, one of the sweetest devils I know!
(2) I unfortunately left my phone in the Wrong Trousers this morning, so I am inaccessible by SMS (or phone calls, if anybody still cares about that) today. Worse than that, I do not have Wikipedia in my pocket!

At work, we have a project to build a web app to front-end a moderately complex Postgres database. This will replace an existing "database" in FileMaker Pro, so the migration is also part of the project (although I think those tools are pretty close to finished).
We have a contractor who got this (I’m guessing) about half done who is having to bow out at this point. Anybody on my F’list looking for a contract gig in Ruby on Rails, or know someone who is? Drop me a note if so. (If you don’t have my email address,
beowabbit@livejournal.com should work fine.)

An interesting perspective on the problems ЖЖ, er, I mean LJ, has been having recently with distributed denial-of-service attacks.
EDIT: I haven’t read much of it yet but at a glance Ethan Zuckerman’s Cute Cat theory of Internet communication looks pretty interesting.

I meant to post this a long long time ago, but life has been crazy. And life is still crazy, so rather than taking the time to write up a post (and not having time for a shower before work), I’m going to quote from here:
I [that’sThe show is going to happen either way, but if Theatre@First can get enough contributions it will be free and outdoors, and free Shakespeare in the park sounds like a very worthy goal to me!dietrich] have a mad plan. This summer, I'm going to direct Shakespeare's As You Like It. Besides the usual awesome actors, clowns, melancholics, cross-dressing leading ladies, wrestling matches and love notes on trees, this production will include SCUL bicycles, burlesque dancers, firespinners, and color-changing LED lights. Yes, we're going for broke on what may be the biggest show Theatre @ First has ever done, by bringing together the fabulous talents of all the fabulous people we know.
Oh, and, we'd like to do it in Seven Hills Park.
Yes, free Shakespeare in the Park for Somerville! And to make it happen, we need support.
I've set up a Kickstarter page with a nifty video and further info about this. Go check it out, and give what you can; we're offering some nifty rewards.

2011-01-18 12:57My friend Nicole has some interesting little xenobotany-themed art sculptures/dioramas for sale on her Etsy shop. At $75/ea they’re out of my price range (they look like they took a lot of time!) but I thought I’d pass along the link.
